THE SALT ROAD IN 2 DAYS

2 days Tour in mountain bike from Limone Piemonte (in the Alps) to Ventimiglia (on the Ligurian Sea), on the trails that travelled during the entire Middle Ages salt merchants in Piedmont and the pilgrims going to Santiago de Compostela.
In the heart of the Ligurian Alps caravans traveling along this route with the mules that although reaching very high shares remained fairly flat, this is one of the oldest streets of Salt, this route also known as Via Marenga, the street leading to the sea, was already mentioned in two documents of the year 1207.
On the Colle di Tenda and in Alta Val Roya attract the attention the series of fortifications that formed the defensive system erected along the French-Italian border between 1881 and 1895, the six fortifications evidence that past military and are now placed in the beautiful natural environment of these mountains.


First stage:

Starting from the town of Limone Piemonte we reach the Colle di Tenda (1,871 m) and then ride towards the imposing structure of the Central Fort (built in 1881 in granite, limestone and shale as the other 5 forts), after a short visit we turn East towards Fort Tabourde built in 1883 and located at 1,982 meters above sea level, was built in order to have at the same time the view of the Central Fort and the Fort Pepin.
The excursion continues towards the Baisse de Peyrefique, a large grassy terrace at 2,030 meters above sea level, magnificent scenery on a beautiful mountain range, pedaling towards the Côte de Spegi and from here until the end of the first stage in the small town of Saint-Dalmas-de-Tende (730 meters above sea level), located in Roya Valley, the Valley of marvels.

We head towards La Brigue, a small medieval village at 770 metres above sea level and then tackle the long climb that will take us from Colla Melosa (1.545 mt) and then to infinite descent in single track that leads down to Pigna, 2000 vertical meters of fun trails technical, from here we head on the asphalt road toward the sea of Ventimiglia. The return is provided by train.
